Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Right for Pakistani Sellers?

This question comes up in almost every first call we have with a new e-commerce client, and the honest answer is: it depends less on the platform's features and more on how you plan to operate.

Shopify: best when you want less to manage

Shopify handles hosting, security, and updates for you. You're paying a monthly fee for that convenience, plus transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments (which isn't fully available in Pakistan, so most local stores use a third-party gateway and eat a small extra fee). For sellers who want to focus on product and marketing rather than server maintenance, Shopify removes an entire category of problems.

WooCommerce: best when you want control and lower running costs

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, which means you own your hosting, your data, and your customizations outright. There's no monthly platform fee — just hosting costs, which for most stores are lower than Shopify's plans once you factor in apps. The tradeoff is that you (or your dev team) are responsible for updates, security, and performance.

What actually decides it for Pakistani sellers

  • Courier integrations. Both platforms have solid courier-booking plugins for TCS, Leopards, PostEx and others now, so this is close to a wash.
  • Payment methods. If JazzCash, Easypaisa or bank transfer COD confirmation matters to you, WooCommerce plugins tend to offer more flexibility without extra app fees.
  • Budget for ongoing work. If you don't have a developer on retainer, Shopify's walled garden is safer. If you do, WooCommerce usually costs less over 2–3 years.
  • Growth plans. Planning to add a marketplace, subscription model, or unusual checkout flow? WooCommerce's open codebase makes custom builds easier.

Neither platform is "wrong" — we've built and continue to run stores on both. The right call comes down to how much you want to own versus outsource.
